Disaster Overview : In April 2005, a cholera epidemic initially declared in Touba, Senegal rapidly escalated. Initially, over 2,000 cases and eight deaths were reported. The epidemic was exacerbated by the large gathering for the Grand Magal de Touba pilgrimage. By early April, the outbreak had spread nationwide with thousands of new cases recorded weekly. Further exacerbated by severe flooding in September, the epidemic resulted in a total of 23,325 cases and 321 deaths by the end of the year.
