Disaster Overview : On October 3, 2012, Burundi faced a cholera outbreak declared as a national disaster by the Minister of Health. Cholera, often recurring with the rainy season, saw an unusual spike due to early rains. Over a period of six weeks, 180 cases and one death were reported. Contributing factors included inadequate safe drinking water and poor sanitation facilities. By the end of December, no new cases were reported, allowing the Minister of Health to declare the end of the epidemic.
