Disaster Overview : On the night of February 9, 2014, torrential rains lasting around 10 hours triggered severe flooding, mudslides, and landslides in five communes of Burundi's capital, Bujumbura. By February 12, the disaster had expanded to affect the areas of Kinyinya and Kijaga in the Mutumbuzi commune, Bujumbura rural province. The tragic event resulted in 64 fatalities, destroyed over 940 homes, and rendered nearly 12,500 people homeless. Infrastructure such as roads and power supplies, as well as essential crops and livelihoods, were severely impacted.
