Disaster Overview : Typhoon Saola, initially a tropical storm, intensified into a typhoon on July 30, 2012. It did not directly hit the Philippines but exacerbated a low pressure area, resulting in heavy rains and floods affecting approximately 950,000 people. Taiwan experienced torrential rains and landslides that led to four fatalities and widespread shutdowns. In China, Saola, which weakened to a tropical storm, caused significant damage, forced evacuations, and resulted in numerous casualties.
