Disaster Overview : On 23 September 2017, Vanuatu's Monaro volcano on Ambae island in Penama province experienced increased activity, prompting the Vanuatu Meteorology & GeoHazards Department (VMGD) to elevate the alert level to Level 4, indicating a moderate eruption state. The eruption posed significant risks including flying rocks, volcanic gas emissions, and ash falls affecting areas within a 6.5 km radius around the volcano's crater. As of late September, over 6,800 people had been evacuated to safer areas within the island.
