Disaster Overview : Starting in mid-2014, South Sudan experienced a significant outbreak of Kala-azar (Visceral Leishmaniasis). The outbreak was prevalent in Upper Nile, Unity, Jonglei, and Eastern Equatoria states. The peak season, exacerbated by displacement, insecurity, low immunity, and limited access to treatment, began unusually early in April. By September, the country had already recorded over 4,000 cases and 102 deaths, and by the end of the year, the numbers surged to 7,204 cases and 199 deaths.
