Disaster Overview : The Hunga-Tonga-Hunga-Ha’apai volcano erupted on January 15, 2022, marking the largest recorded eruption since Krakatoa in 1883. The eruption triggered tsunami waves up to 15 meters high that struck the west coast of Tongatapu, ‘Eua, and Ha’apai. A vast ashfall covered around five square kilometers, severely impacting life and infrastructure on the islands. Damage to telecommunications made information sparse, but surveillance indicated severe damage to homes, roads, water tanks, and other infrastructure. A state of emergency was declared by the Tongan Prime Minister on January 16, and international assistance was requested.
