Disaster Overview : In late September 1996, Cambodia faced severe flooding caused by heavy rainfall from two storms originating in China, Laos, and northeast Cambodia. This led to a rapid rise in the Mekong River's water level, resulting in widespread flooding across six provinces, including Ratanakiri, Stung Treng, Kampong Cham, Kandal, and Prey Veng. The flooding impacted some districts in Phnom Penh as well, as the river's level neared a critical 11.20 meters.
