Disaster Overview : Between 2012 and 2013, Guatemala experienced significant food insecurity due to severe drought conditions. Rainfall deficits in July 2012 led to substantial crop losses in the eastern, central, and parts of the western regions. The situation was exacerbated by crop pests and diseases, leading to a catastrophic decrease in maize and bean production. By August 2012, almost 40,000 families were affected, and by October, around 236,000 people required assistance. In 2013, continued rainfall deficits and the impact of rust on coffee cultivation further jeopardized food security, increasing malnutrition rates by 36.5% compared to 2012.
