Disaster Overview : On May 10, 2024, Grenada declared a water crisis as the island faced a critical shortage of water resources. Prolonged drought conditions combined with insufficient rainfall and aging water infrastructure led to critically low water levels in reservoirs. Stringent water usage restrictions were enforced starting May 12, 2024. Recent rains have provided some relief, but water supplies remain insufficient. Farmers are experiencing crop failures and food shortages, while bush fires caused by a heatwave have exacerbated the crisis. Despite efforts by the Grenada Red Cross and the National Water and Sewage Authority, the water crisis is expected to persist until the peak of the next rainy season.
