Disaster Overview : Beginning on August 14, 2013, torrential rains triggered severe flash floods in various regions of Yemen. The event lasted about a week, causing wide-scale damage to homes, roads, and agricultural land. The severe weather conditions adversely affected over 23,500 people in eight governorates, leading to nearly 40 fatalities. By mid-September, the number of affected individuals had risen to 50,000 as heavy rains persisted in the southern and central parts of the country. Humanitarian efforts were initiated to assist the affected populations, especially IDPs in camps like Al Mazraq. Although the northern regions saw a reduction in rain by early October, the south remained in need of continued assistance.
