Disaster Overview : Southern Africa encountered a profound food insecurity crisis between 2015 and 2017. Adverse weather patterns, including droughts and floods, significantly decreased crop production and led to widespread food shortages. The regions most affected include southern Angola, Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Lesotho, Malawi, Madagascar, and South Africa. An estimated 29 million people faced food insecurity during this period due to the combination of poor harvest seasons and structural factors, exacerbated by the El Niño effects.
