Disaster Overview : In May 1998, torrential rains led to severe flooding in the Jalal-Abad and Osh oblasts of Kyrgyzstan. The flooding was exacerbated by a broken dam on the Kugart River, resulting in widespread destruction across the affected areas. The floods caused the death of one person and forced thousands to abandon their homes. Significant infrastructure damage, including destroyed houses, offices, roads, and power supply lines, was reported.
