Disaster Overview : From mid-December 2012 to mid-January 2013, Malawi experienced heavy rainfall that resulted in severe flooding across several districts. The Mangochi district in the southern part of the country was the hardest hit, with 1,600 families severely affected. The flooding caused houses to collapse, roads to become impassable, and swept away livestock and crops. An assessment conducted on January 12, 2013, indicated that over 16,370 individuals, or 3,274 households, were affected. The situation was further exacerbated by an acute food shortage in the country.
