Disaster Overview : In January 2013, an extreme cold wave gripped the Murgab District in Badakshan Province, Tajikistan. Temperatures plummeted to between minus 35 and minus 55 degrees Celsius, leading to heavy snowfall that isolated several villages. The severe weather caused blocked roads, power shortages, and broken communication lines, making it challenging to reach and provide aid to the affected areas. The population, already strained from last winter's freezing conditions which resulted in massive livestock losses, faced further hardships as they were unable to adequately prepare for the severe winter.
