Disaster Overview : In mid-2014, El Salvador experienced an alarming health crisis with simultaneous outbreaks of chikungunya and dengue fever. The outbreak began in early June in the Axutuxtepeque municipality and quickly spread across the San Salvador Department. By July, the chikungunya cases had reached over 1,300 suspected incidents across six departments. Concurrently, dengue fever saw a sharp rise with more than 15,000 suspected cases. The Ministry of Health issued a Yellow Alert in response to the escalating situation.
