Disaster Overview : On January 10, 1998, a 6.2 magnitude earthquake struck Zhangjiankou Prefecture in Hebei Province, China. The quake occurred in the mountainous northern regions, which are more remote and less industrialized. Extensive damage was reported in Zhangbei, Shangyi, Kangbao, and Wanquan counties, severely impacting many villages and townships. The earthquake caused significant casualties and widespread destruction, particularly in Zhangbei and Shangyi Counties.
