Disaster Overview : In September 1984, the Philippines was struck by two powerful typhoons, Maring and Nitang, causing extensive damage and loss of life. Typhoon Maring hit on August 27, followed closely by Typhoon Nitang on September 1. Typhoon Nitang, also known as Ike, was the most potent storm since 1970, with gusts reaching 275 kph (170 mph). The hardest-hit areas included Cebu, Surigao Del Norte, and Misamis Oriental. The disasters significantly impacted central and southern provinces.
