Disaster Overview : Tropical Cyclone Ivan, a Category 4 cyclone with wind gusts reaching 230 kilometers per hour, made landfall in Madagascar on February 17-18, 2008. It caused extensive damage in Sainte-Marie island and affected 14 regions and 44 zones in the north-east and north-west parts of the mainland. The cyclone resulted in the deaths of 93 people, affected 332,391 others, and displaced 191,182 people. Continuous rainfall for several days exacerbated conditions and delayed preliminary damage assessments.
