Disaster Overview : On the night of May 25, 1986, a double-decker ferry boat carrying 1,500 people capsized on the river Meghna in the southern district of Barisal, Bangladesh. The tragedy is considered one of the deadliest in recent history for the region. Despite the rescue efforts, only 157 bodies were recovered, with estimates suggesting that around 600 passengers may have lost their lives as many were swept far downstream.
