Disaster Overview : On February 16, 1989, a major fire broke out in Mergui, located in southern Burma (now Myanmar). The blaze took eight hours to control and caused extensive damage, destroying several key buildings including schools, fire stations, and a road transport administration department building. The overall financial loss was estimated to be around $48 million. The disaster resulted in the destruction of 1,792 houses, displacement of 4,242 households, and left 22,324 people homeless.
