Disaster Overview : In May 2012, Northeast Brazil was hit by a severe drought, causing major disruptions across the region. The lack of rainfall led to emergency declarations in 450 municipalities, affecting almost 4 million residents. The Brazilian federal government stepped in, allocating R$ 2.7 billion (approximately US$ 1.35 billion) for drought relief efforts, including water distribution and farmer support. An Integrated Committee in the Fight against Drought was also established to coordinate the response.
