Disaster Overview : In early December 2020, the Northeast monsoon combined with a depression in the south-east Bay of Bengal caused severe flooding in Northern Sri Lanka. The worst-affected areas were the Jaffna and Kilinochchi districts, where significant rainfall inundated low-lying regions and caused extensive damage to residential areas, agricultural lands, and infrastructures. The governmental authorities declared a local emergency, closing schools and other institutions. Over 111,000 people have been impacted, and thousands of homes damaged.
